How to Prepare Your Home for a Professional Painting Job in Windsor Ontario

Preparing your Windsor home for professional painters takes about two to three hours and directly affects the quality of the result. This guide covers exactly what to do before the Logistic Painting crew arrives — and what we handle ourselves.

When professional painters are booked for your Windsor Ontario home, there are specific preparation steps the homeowner can do in advance that make the project run faster and produce a better result — and specific things the painting crew handles themselves. Understanding the division of preparation tasks helps you avoid doing unnecessary work and ensures the project can start on time without delays.

What the Homeowner Should Do Before Painters Arrive in Windsor

Clear the Room of Small Items

Remove everything from shelves, bookcases, and surfaces in the rooms being painted. This includes books, decorative items, picture frames, and anything stored on windowsills, mantels, or ledges. These small items are not covered by drop cloths and cannot be efficiently moved by the crew. Leaving them in place slows the crew down and risks damage to your belongings. Clear surfaces take about 30 minutes per room and directly speed up the crew’s setup time.

Move Furniture to the Centre of the Room

Furniture does not need to leave the room — it should be clustered in the centre, away from all walls, with enough clearance for the painter to work along each wall with a ladder and roller. Heavy furniture that cannot be moved should be flagged when booking — we can work around very large fixed pieces, but we need to know in advance. If you have the ability to move furniture yourself before the crew arrives, doing so saves time at the start of the project.

Remove Wall-Mounted Items

Take down all picture frames, mirrors, artwork, clocks, wall-mounted shelves, and decorative hooks before the crew arrives. This includes anything mounted with nails, screws, or adhesive strips. Wall-mounted televisions and their mounting brackets should also be removed or the area flagged as a no-paint zone in advance. Leaving wall hardware in place creates masking challenges and results in unpainted areas where items were mounted.

Protect Fixed Furniture and Flooring You Cannot Move

If there are large, heavy items that cannot be moved — a piano, a built-in, an antique wardrobe — let us know before the project. We bring drop cloths and protection materials, but knowing about fixed items in advance allows us to allocate the right supplies. Cover upholstered furniture in the centre of the room with a sheet or light cover to protect from dust during preparation and painting.

Ensure Clear Access to the Work Area

Make sure the crew can bring materials and equipment through the entry point of your home without obstruction — typically the front door or garage. Remove exterior potted plants, door mats, or decorative items near the entry that might obstruct ladder and material movement. For exterior painting, clear vehicles from the driveway and flagstone areas adjacent to the home.

Secure Pets

Pets should be confined to a room not being painted for the duration of the project. Open doors and windows during painting create an escape opportunity for dogs and cats. Paint fumes, even from low-VOC products, are not appropriate for pets to breathe in an enclosed room. Plan ahead for where your pets will spend the painting day — a crate, a room not in scope, or with a friend or family member.

What the Painting Crew Handles in Windsor

  • Covering floors — Drop cloths on all floors throughout the work area
  • Masking trim and adjacent surfaces — Painter’s tape on all trim, ceiling lines, and hardware
  • Drywall repair — Filling nail holes, cracks, and small damage before primer or paint is applied
  • Priming repaired areas — Spot-priming all repairs and problem areas
  • Moving furniture as needed — Further shifting of furniture as the crew moves between walls
  • Full cleanup after completion — All tape, drop cloths, and painting materials are removed; the room is left clean and ready to use

What You Do Not Need to Do Before the Painters Arrive in Windsor

You do not need to fill nail holes, patch cracks, sand surfaces, wash walls, tape trim, or apply primer before the professional crew arrives. These are all preparation steps that Logistic Painting handles as part of the standard painting process. Attempting to do these steps yourself — particularly if done incorrectly — can create additional work for the crew. The most useful thing you can do is clear the room and secure your pets. Everything else is our responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions — Preparing Your Windsor Home for Professional Painters

Do I need to wash the walls before painters arrive in Windsor?

No — washing walls is part of the professional preparation process, not the homeowner’s responsibility. The crew washes walls where needed as part of the prep stage before painting. For heavily soiled walls (kitchen grease, smoke, handprints), letting us know in advance allows us to bring the right cleaning products and budget time for it. No pre-washing is required from the homeowner.

Do I need to patch holes in the walls before professional painters arrive?

No. Drywall repair — filling nail holes, patching cracks, and addressing surface damage — is part of the standard professional painting preparation process. The crew assesses and repairs all surface issues before primer and paint are applied. Attempting to patch holes yourself before we arrive is not necessary and can sometimes create a different surface texture that requires additional levelling.

How far in advance should I prepare rooms for painting in Windsor?

Clear rooms and move furniture the evening before or the morning of the painting project. Do not move furniture days in advance — rooms are disrupted and difficult to live in without furniture in place. Same-day or evening-before preparation is all that is needed and is what most Windsor homeowners find most practical.

Do I need to be home while professional painters work in Windsor?

Not necessarily. Many Windsor homeowners leave during the painting day and return after the crew has finished. We confirm access arrangements — key, code, or stay-home preference — before the project starts. If you prefer to be present, you are welcome to stay. If you need to leave for work or other commitments, we can work independently and lock up when done based on your instructions.

What if I have a pet that cannot be confined to another room in Windsor?

Let us know before the project starts. Arrangements can be made — working around a pet’s room, using the lowest-VOC available products, or coordinating a schedule where the pet is out of the home during the most intensive part of the painting. Pet arrangements are much easier to plan before the project starts than on the day.
