Hiring professional painters in Windsor takes care of most of the preparation work — surface filling, sanding, caulking, priming, and protecting floors and furniture. But there are things only you can do before the crew arrives, and doing them properly makes the project smoother and protects your personal belongings. Here is what to do room by room before your Windsor painters show up.
What You Should Do Before Painters Arrive
Remove Wall Decor and Fixtures
Take down all pictures, mirrors, artwork, and wall-mounted decorations. Remove curtains and curtain rods where possible. Switch plate covers and outlet covers can be left on — we remove them during prep. If you have light fixtures directly against the wall that you want to keep, leave them in place and we will mask around them.
Clear the Room
Remove small furniture, lamps, floor plants, and all personal items from the room. Clear off shelves and remove all valuables from open storage. The less that is in the room, the faster the crew can move and the less risk to your belongings. For large furniture that cannot be moved — sofas, beds, dressers — leave it in place and we will move it as needed and cover it with drop cloths.
Remove Valuables and Fragile Items
Remove all fragile items from shelves, side tables, and display cabinets in the room being painted. If adjacent rooms might generate paint fumes that affect sensitive items, close doors or temporarily relocate those items. Remove anything irreplaceable from the area entirely — do not rely on drop cloths to protect extremely valuable or fragile objects.
Clear a Path to Each Wall
Make sure the crew can access each wall without moving furniture repeatedly. If a room has a lot of furniture, push it to the centre and we will move individual pieces as we work around the room. For basement painting, clear at least a two-foot path along each wall.
Handle Your Pets
Arrange for pets to be out of the painting area during the project. Paint fumes can be hard on animals, especially in enclosed spaces. If your pet is staying in the home, keep them in a room that is not being painted and ensure they cannot get into the paint area. Let us know at the start of the job where your pets will be so we can work around them safely.
For Exterior Painting — What to Do Outside
Remove patio furniture, planters, and any outdoor decor from within two metres of the house. Move vehicles out of the driveway if the crew needs access to the sides of the home. Trim any shrubs or plants that are growing close to the foundation or siding so the crew has clear access and good airflow to the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions — Preparing for Painters Windsor Ontario
Do I need to empty the room completely before painters arrive in Windsor?
No. Remove small items, valuables, wall decor, and lamps. Our crew will move and protect large furniture — beds, sofas, dressers — using drop cloths and sheeting. Clearing the smaller items and ensuring the crew can access each wall makes the project run more efficiently and protects things that matter.
Do I need to wash the walls before painters arrive?
In most cases, no. Surface cleaning is part of our prep process. If you have areas with heavy grease — near a stove or in a kitchen — a basic wipe-down before we arrive is helpful but not required. We clean and degrease surfaces as part of the prep work included in every estimate.
Should I patch holes in the walls before painters come?
You can, but it is not necessary. Filling holes and surface damage is part of our standard prep process. If you have already patched holes, let us know during the estimate visit — we will sand and prime those spots before applying paint. Do not apply paint over bare spackling compound; leave it for us to prime.
How long before painters arrive should I prepare the room?
Preparing the room the day before is ideal. This gives the crew full, unobstructed access from the start of the job and avoids any rushed last-minute clearing. If the project spans multiple rooms, prepare each room the evening before it is scheduled to be painted.
Do I need to be home while my Windsor home is being painted?
You do not need to be home throughout the day. We ask that you are present at the start for a brief walkthrough and at the end for the final inspection so you can confirm the result meets your expectations. Many Windsor homeowners provide entry access and do the final walkthrough at day’s end.
